Excerpt from an interview with Maurice Bernstein, originally published in Love Injection Fanzine, Issue No. 4 (may 2015).

Maurice Bernstein: Louie [Vega] called me up one day, very frustrated, and said he was working on this project he had called Nuyorican Soul, and Gilles Peterson in the UK was gonna have it on Talkin’ Loud and he had a Japanese label, too, but he couldn’t find an American record company who would even be interested or understand what it was. I was like, “Well, if I told you I have a record label, would you sign to me?” He goes, “Of course!” I go, “Well, I’m gonna send you a contract, then.” And that’s how I signed it without hearing a note. They were in the process of making the album. I’d go to all the sessions. We got to market the record and do all the packaging. It was a very unique experience, working with all those guys. We threw a release party, with Tito Puente and George Benson and Roy Ayers. Then we did a massive concert with them. It was a great experience.
